Zoey Shen: Growing Beyond the Bench

A promising drug candidate is only the beginning. Before a medicine can reach patients, its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)—the component responsible for its therapeutic effect—must be developed into a process that can reliably produce the material needed for further development and, eventually, commercial supply. Getting there requires scientists to do more than identify the right chemistry. They must also work out how to make it consistently, address technical challenges and build processes that can support the next stages of development.

At WuXi AppTec’s San Diego site, Zoey Shen plays a part in this work. When Zoey joined the company in 2022 as a PRD Associate Scientist, she began her journey in API process research and development. Over the next three years, she progressed to PRD Scientist I, taking on greater responsibility for both technical work and project coordination.

In new drug development, progress depends on more than scientific ideas. It also depends on the people who turn those ideas into workable processes, solve problems along the way, and keep different parts of a project moving in the same direction. Throughout her tenure, Zoey has gradually taken on a role that brings these elements together and has demonstrated strong technical expertise, initiative, and leadership.

As a Project Coordinator, Zoey has been responsible for day-to-day communication with clients and project management activities, ensuring efficient coordination and successful project execution. She also played a key role in establishing and optimizing PRD operational processes, supporting deviation investigations, troubleshooting technical and operational challenges, and facilitating non-GMP manufacturing workflows. Each task addresses a different challenge, but together they help projects run more smoothly.

Her contributions have also helped strengthen the San Diego site's capabilities. Zoey played an important role in establishing its pre-formulation capabilities, broadening the technical services available to customers and supporting business growth. Within the team, she coordinates Morning Pulse meetings and encourages communication across functions, helping colleagues share information and resolve issues together.

For Zoey, the appeal of working at the San Diego site lies in precisely this closeness between people and their work.

“What I like most about working at WuXi AppTec's San Diego site is the selective and collaborative nature of our teams. Our teams work closely together and share ideas to achieve common goals, allowing everyone to have a significant impact on the success of a project. In addition, the highly collaborative environment between teams provides a platform for learning from experts in different fields,” she says.

For Zoey, this collaboration also helps accelerate project progress by enabling teams to communicate effectively, resolve challenges together, and align their efforts to meet client requirements. Working across functions has broadened her perspective and strengthened her appreciation for how scientific expertise, operational support, and clear communication contribute to project success. Expanding into project coordination and helping build pre-formulation capabilities have provided opportunities to keep learning while contributing to the site’s development.

Outside work, Zoey enjoys playing the piano and attending concerts, particularly exploring the contrasting styles of Chopin and Bach. Chopin’s lively Minute Waltz, sparkling “Black Key” Étude, and expressive Fantaisie-Impromptu each call for a different balance of energy, precision, and sensitivity. Bach’s Prelude in C major offers a calm, flowing character, while the Goldberg Variations reveal how a shared musical foundation can support remarkably different forms of expression.

For Zoey, playing piano offers a meaningful parallel to her work. Her hands follow different patterns while her feet shape the sound through the pedals. Bringing these movements together requires careful listening, coordination, and attention to both individual details and the whole piece.

She draws on a similar balance in her professional responsibilities. API process development and implementation require precision and systematic problem-solving. Project coordination involves listening to clients and colleagues, understanding different priorities, and aligning activities to meet client requirements. Helping build pre-formulation capabilities brings together scientific work and the operational preparation needed to deliver a new service.

Just as high and low notes contribute different voices to a composition, colleagues bring complementary expertise to a project. Zoey values understanding how those contributions fit together and helping the team move forward. Attending concerts adds another perspective: hearing different interpretations of familiar works reflects the appreciation for learning from others and considering new approaches.

Every improvement in a process, every technical challenge resolved and every capability developed can help customers move their drug programs forward. Zoey’s contribution is one part of that wider effort at WuXi AppTec—and a reminder that bringing new medicines closer to patients depends not only on scientific breakthroughs, but also on the people who make progress possible.
