Today, on August 1st, we mark World Lung Cancer Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness, reflecting on progress, and envisioning a future where lung cancer is no longer a leading cause of death. This year's theme, "Stronger Together," resonates deeply with WuXi AppTec. It’s a reminder of the incredible strides our industry has made in developing new treatments that offer hope to patients worldwide.
Lung cancer remains one of the most devastating diseases. Every minute, more than three lives are lost to lung cancer, amounting to approximately 1.8 million deaths annually. This accounts for about 18% of all cancer deaths, making it the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The burden is immense—not only for patients who face severe health challenges and diminished quality of life but also for their families who navigate the emotional and financial toll of the disease.
When we look back over the past decade, the landscape of lung cancer treatment has transformed dramatically. As we commemorate this day, we want to highlight some of the most significant and groundbreaking approved lung cancer drugs that symbolize our progress.

One of the most significant breakthroughs in lung cancer treatment is the advent of precision medicine. By understanding the genetic mutations and molecular changes specific to a patient's tumor, we can now tailor treatments that are more effective and less toxic than traditional chemotherapy. Drugs like osimertinib (Tagrisso) for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has specific EGFR mutations have been a game-changer. This third-generation EGFR inhibitor targets the T790M mutation, offering effective treatment options for patients who develop resistance to earlier-generation EGFR inhibitors.
Similarly, alectinib (Alecensa) has shown significant efficacy in shrinking tumors and delaying disease progression for NSCLC patients with ALK gene rearrangements, providing new hope for those with ALK-positive lung cancer.
Immunotherapy has also emerged as a game-changer in the fight against lung cancer. Nivolumab (Opdivo) and pembrolizumab (Keytruda) has revolutionized the treatment landscape for various cancers, including lung cancer. By blocking the PD-1 pathway, this immunotherapy enables the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively. It's been particularly impactful for patients with advanced NSCLC, extending survival rates and offering a new lease on life.
Another innovative drug, trastuzumab deruxtecan (Enhertu), combines targeted therapy with chemotherapy. It’s specifically designed for patients with HER2-mutant NSCLC, providing a powerful option for those with this particular genetic profile. Enhertu's unique mechanism of action exemplifies the cutting-edge approach we are taking in cancer treatment.
In addition to these drugs, researchers have developed innovative therapies targeting specific subgroups of lung cancer patients. These include inhibitors for angiogenesis, KRAS, ROS1, and other challenging targets. These advancements have made it possible to treat many previously untreatable patients, significantly extending their lives.
On this World Lung Cancer Day, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the many innovators for your heroic efforts, and we are continually humbled and inspired in the journey of supporting your important work as a service platform. Your efforts have led to tangible breakthroughs that provide hope where there was once despair, and turning what used to be a death sentence into a manageable condition.
While we celebrate these achievements, it's also crucial to acknowledge that our collaborative journey is far from over, but with the same spirit of innovation, collaboration, and compassion, we can continue to make extraordinary strides. Together, we can turn the tide against lung cancer and bring us towards closer to a future where every drug can be made and every disease can be treated.
