Meet Jacob Mandell: From the Lab Bench to Business Development

Some careers begin with a plan. Others begin with a question. For Jacob Mandell, Associate Director of Business Development at WuXi AppTec, it was the latter that quietly shaped everything that followed. By late June, he’ll be celebrating his 5^th year with WuXi AppTec.

What happens after discovery? It was a question first formed in the lab—amid experiments, data, and the steady pursuit of understanding how biology changes under stress, disease, and treatment. As a neuroscience student working in a cardiology research lab, Jacob was immersed in the early stages of scientific discovery. But even then, he was drawn less to isolated findings and more to what came next: how ideas moved beyond the bench and into the world.

That curiosity would eventually define his path. Through graduate studies and early research experiences, Jacob began to see a broader ecosystem behind every experiment. Science did not move forward alone. It depended on networks—scientists, developers, and partners working across boundaries, often invisibly, to transform ideas into therapies.

His first exposure to this ecosystem came through early biotech experiences, where external partners were not peripheral, but essential. Among them were global CRDMO organizations like WuXi AppTec, enabling programs to progress beyond what any single lab could achieve alone.

In subsequent roles supporting preclinical programs, Jacob found himself no longer observing from the sidelines. He was managing timelines, coordinating external partners, and making decisions that directly shaped whether promising programs advanced or stalled. Collaboration was no longer conceptual—it was operational, fast-moving, and deeply consequential.

Then came a shift that changed his perspective entirely. Stepping into his first business development role, Jacob moved across the table—from program owner to partner. There he discovered a different vantage point on the same mission.

Every conversation, regardless of geography or company size, carried the same underlying urgency: to move science forward faster, more reliably, and with greater confidence so that it could ultimately reach patients.
