How WuXi AppTec Supports Manufacturing for Innovative Medicines on a Global Scale: An Update from Middletown, Delaware

WuXi AppTec supports the manufacturing of innovative medicines by building global capacity that helps clients advance programs from preclinical development to commercialization. In June 2026, the Open House at its new Middletown, Del., site marks an important milestone in the expansion of WuXi AppTec’s worldwide manufacturing network. Designed to support drug product manufacturing for the North American and European markets, the 1.74 million-square-foot campus is expected to begin operations in Q4 2026. The project represents one of several major expansions across the United States, Europe, and Asia over the next two years, adding manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand from customers around the world.

Middletown Phase I is On Track to Come Online by the End of 2026

The Middletown site is progressing on-schedule as part of WuXi AppTec’s long-term commitment to strengthening global CRDMO capacity for innovative medicines. In August 2022, the site was an open field. Today, it is taking shape as a major drug product manufacturing campus built to serve customers worldwide with speed, scale, and scientific excellence.

Phase I is expected to establish key operational capabilities supporting both clinical and commercial programs, including oral solid dosage manufacturing, analytical and microbiological laboratory support, clinical packaging, labeling, and distribution.

Adding Flexibility and Supply Chain Resilience for Global Customers

As part of WuXi AppTec’s global CRDMO network, the Middletown site is designed to provide global clients with greater flexibility in how they manufacture and deliver innovative medicines. For organizations advancing complex and fast-moving pipelines, the state-of-the-art facility will add new drug product development and manufacturing capacity, helping strengthen supply chain resilience.

“As an enabler of innovation, WuXi AppTec continues to proactively accelerate global capacity planning and capability building to meet the growing needs of our customers,” said Dr. Minzhang Chen, Co-CEO of WuXi AppTec. “We remain committed to our core value of ‘doing the right thing and doing it right,’ continuously enhancing operational resilience, and delivering greater value for the industry and for patients.”

Following Phase I, the Middletown site is expected to add sterile fill/finish capabilities for vials, cartridges, and pre-filled syringes in 2027, supporting solutions, emulsions, suspensions, and lyophilized powders. Together, these capabilities will help global customers address a wide range of product needs within the same WuXi AppTec network.

A Unified Global Network with One Global Quality System

A key foundation of WuXi AppTec’s global network is its “One Global Quality System,” which aligns quality standards, procedures, and training across all sites. Beyond Middletown, WuXi AppTec is continuing to expand manufacturing capabilities across multiple regions:

  • Couvet, Switzerland: Expansion of drug product manufacturing and packaging capacity is underway. A new PSD-4 spray dryer is expected to become operational in Q4 2026.
  • Singapore: The site will strengthen WuXi AppTec’s global API manufacturing network for both small molecules and TIDES therapies and is expected to become operational in 2027.
  • Taixing, China: One new small-molecule API plant began operations in May 2026, and another is expected to become operational later in 2026. In 2027, two additional facilities supporting oligonucleotide, peptide, and PMO production are expected to come online.
  • Changzhou, China: WuXi AppTec plans to begin construction of a new API manufacturing site to help meet growing customer demand.

While each site has its own local teams and operational focus, they function as part of a single integrated platform. Rather than coordinating activities across multiple vendors, WuXi AppTec’s customers can work within a unified global network supported by “One Global Quality System” and a culture of excellence, helping advance programs from development through commercialization with greater continuity and consistency.

Key Takeaways:

  • Construction of the Middletown, Del., site remains on track. Phase I is expected to be online by the end of 2026, with oral solid dosage manufacturing, analytical and microbiological laboratory support, clinical packaging, labeling, and distribution capabilities in one location.
  • By 2027, the site is expected to add sterile fill/finish capabilities for vials, cartridges, and pre-filled syringes, supporting solutions, emulsions, suspensions, and lyophilized powders.
  • The facility will provide customers with an additional integrated drug product manufacturing option within WuXi AppTec’s worldwide network, helping diversify supply strategies, coordinate clinical-to-commercial manufacturing, and support multiple product formats.
  • The Middletown site is being built under the same global quality system that guides WuXi AppTec facilities worldwide, providing consistency and dependability across the network.
  • The Open House represents one of several major capacity expansions across the United States, Europe, and Asia over the next two years, reflecting WuXi AppTec’s continued investment in supporting the evolving needs of innovative drug developers.
